Anonymous Surfing

Description

The FTC estimated that close to 10 million people in the US were victims of identity theft last year. Protect your personal information, credit card numbers and financial transactions from online snoops with Anonymizer 2005. This powerful privacy protection program uses 128-bit SSL technology to create an encrypted path between your computer and the Internet to shield you from even the most sophisticated methods of online spying and snooping. It's simple to setup and use, and it works silently in the background, without slowing down your Internet connection.

Customer reviews for 'Anonymous Surfing'

«Re: bank encrypting»

IE will not connect to my online banking website due to the issues mentioned in previous reviews. Interestingly enough, Avant Browser will. There are several screens you have to go through, but you can reach your banking web site in stealth mode.

«Another level of security - slowdown not even noticable»

I love this software. I wanted something that would keep all the script kiddies from attacking my network when they spotted my IP from myspace or any other application I was using. The firewall kept them out, but this adds another layer that diverts them. Just makes me feel better to be "anonymous" no matter where I surf.

I haven't noticed any slowdown while using this software, even though I know it has to be there. Internet speed tests report full numbers very comparable to before using the program.

I do occasionally have sites, such as credit card and banking sites, that I have to simply turn off the safe surfing (using 2 clicks, 1 to bring up the program and 1 to turn it off). The proxy gets confused by something and reports an error. I assume it has something to due the added layer of protection at these type of multiple security level sites. Not a big deal and well worth the protection the rest of the time.

I did have a couple of questions for support. They responded quickly and completely. My questions weren't difficult, so I can't attest to their level of support-just their speed.

«Slow proxy servers and flawed wireless security feature»

I bought this program for the wireless security feature that lets you encrypt the data sent via your laptop's wireless signal to Anonymizer's servers. I thought this would be a useful security feature when accessing bank accounts and other sensitive information from my laptop computer. Unfortunately, Anonymous Surfing does not work with banking websites since they are unable to place a valid security certificate (remember, the traffic is being routed via Anonymizer's proxy servers, so the website cannot place the certificate on your computer). For that reason, I can only access banking websites with Anonymous Surfing turned off, which in my eyes defeats one of the most important purposes for having a wireless security feature.

Another gripe is that Anonymous Surfing will slow down the speed at which webpages are loaded, which is particularly noticeable with a broadband internet connection. I guess Anonymizer's proxy servers are just not able to relay pages quickly enough to your computer.

Given that the program REQUIRES AN ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION FEE of $29.99 (first year of service is included witht he program), I'll rather save that money and continue to access my banking and financial websites via a wired connection.
