Description

The Midland GXT800VP4 22-Channel 26-Mile GMRS 2-Way Radio Pair Pack with Rechargeable Batteries and Charger represents the state-of-the-art in high-tech engineering, for a compact package that is big in performance. Skillfully constructed with the finest components, the Midland GXT800 is built with all solid-state circuitry mounted on a rugged, printed circuit board to provide you with reliable and trouble-free performance for years to come.

The Midland GXT800 radio provides you with 22 GMRS/FRS (General Mobile Radio Service/Family Radio Service) UHF channels, and up to a 26-mile range in open territory. In addition to the 22 possible channels, the GXT800 comes with 121 privacy codes to lessen interference or eaves-dropping, as well as all 10 NOAA weather channels and a NOAA weather alert function. These powerful radios have an easy-to-read backlit LCD display that shows status information at a glance even in difficult lighting, and a large easy-to-use keypad on the front for one-touch access to important features.

The GXT800 radio is full of features such as an outgoing call alert to notify your intended receiver of incoming traffic, and five incoming call alerts to identify various senders. This radio also features a channel scan for locating active channels, an auto squelch for filtering out weak signals, and a vibrating alert for use in both quiet and noisy environments. This unit provides High, Medium and Low power settings so you can choose to maximize transmission distance or save power, and a VOX function with selectable levels for voice-activated, hands-free transmissions. The GXT800 also includes keystroke tones, a roger beep that confirms transmission conclusion, and a silent operation for quieting beeps, tones and alerts when you can't afford to make extra noise.

Midland's GXT800 radio is constructed to be water proof to JIS4 specifications, so it can be used in virtually any environment, and has a keypad lock to avoid accidentally changing the radio settings. This radio runs on a Midland 4.8-volt rechargeable NiMH battery pack that can be recharged while in the radio, or can be powered by four AAA batteries during extended trips. This unit also includes a battery life extender function, as well as a low-battery indicator so you never get caught offguard without power. The GXT800 comes with a speaker/microphone/headset/charging jack so you can use it with an external speaker or microphone, or a pair of headphones, and recharge your battery pack when not in use. The Midland GXT800VP4 pack comes with two radios, each with a belt clip for convenient carrying or hands-free use, as well as two rechargeable NiMH battery packs, an AC wall adapter, and a dual radio desktop charger. These radios are even backed by a manufacturer's three-year warranty.

What's in the Box
2 GXT800 two-way radios, 2 x microphone headsets, dual radio desktop charger, 2 x rechargeable NiMH battery packs, AC wall adapter, DC vehicle adapter, user's guide and warranty information.

Customer reviews for "Midland GXT800VP4 22-Channel 26-Mile GMRS 2-Way Radio (Pair)"

«Great battery»

Definitely works within 1 mile in the city. More than that the voice dropped and we get alot of static. Battery lasts a long time.

«Not very reliable»

While an improvement over the standard Motorola walki-talki sets, the Midland 800 series units have several flaws. First, the volume even at maximum isn't very strong, so in wind or other conditions of ambient noise you'll have a difficult time hearing what is being transmitted. Secondly, the battery life indicator is really funny - one moment it shows full power, the next it's flashing to warn you that you're nearly out of power. Thirdly the hands-free stuff doesn't work at all (you can't hear what is being transmitted, so weak is the volume when channeled through the earpiece). But most seriously of all, one of the four units I bought failed after only 14 hours of (non continuous) use. It stopped being able to receive from any other unit. UPDATE: after buying another pair of identical radios I had yet another unit that couldn't receive, this time right out of the box. So Midland is shipping products with a 33% defect rate, which is completely unacceptable.

All in all, I can't recommend this product. Other reviewers have had better experiences with their purchases, but my experience only confirms a growing prejudice of "don't buy American electronic products because they are poorly made."

«Not an improvement»

We own a resort where we use many, many of these radios. We appreciate the reasonable price of Midland radios compared to some other options, especially since staff are likely to lose radios out in the woods or over water.

This generation of Midland radio seems to be worse than the previous ones. 4 that we bought in May are already shot, after only 3 months of use. There were changes in the charger and the battery compared to the last few models & some of the problems may stem from that, as they especially don't work right in the charger (unlike the older models). We are still using radios from the 700 and 600 series that work much better than these. Midland offers a 3 year warranty, but what they don't mention is that using that warranty costs almost about as much as buying a new radio. The 3 year warranty claim is just as bogus as the 26 mile radio range claim. Disappointing.

One of our staff members has a Cobra she uses on our same channel. She has the best range (in reality here, less than a mile) and the most consistent reception. Unless Midland comes through a little better on their warranty than was indicated in their first response ($20 per radio for warranty service) we will be buying the Cobra radios in the future.
